I Apologize, A Poem

I Apologize
- Lump in my throat tears in my eyes
- How many times must I apologize
- Reach up to knock
- Explanation ready to go
- I'm his mother that's my son
- I apologize if he disturbed anyone
- He screams. they stare. They whisper.
- Strangers, neighbors and well meaning friends
- Stand in judgement of me once again
- We all wear our good people mask in way
- Guess They forgot to put theirs on today
- Even in the grocery store
- He screams. they stare. They whisper.
-I have to explain once more
- Lump in my throat tears in my eyes once again i apologize.
- I explain he is autistic. He is a collector
- I return the items he took and I hear them tell each other
- How they would have whooped my child
- That I should raise him better
- We all wear our good people mask in a way
- Guess they forgot to put theirs on today
- I'm his mother that's my son I apologize if he disturbed anyone
- Good Christians do it too
- They think you can just pray the Autism away
- He screams. They stare. They whisper.
- Lump in my throat tears in my eyes
- The usher escorts us outside once again I apologize
- We all wear our good people mask in a way
- Guess they forgot to put theirs on today
- I'm his mother that's my son
- I apologize if he disturbed anyone.
- I know you stare because you don't understand.
- You whisper because you expect me to feel ashamed
- I apologize for falling short of your expectations once again.
